Looking Beyond the Evercade EXP-R Retro Handheld? 6 Alternatives Worth a Look

Comparing Evercade EXP-R Alternatives

Gamkowy RG DS Plus Dual-Screen

The Gamkowy RG DS Plus Dual-Screen offers a distinct flip design with dual screens, unlike the single-panel Evercade EXP-R. This model measures 3 inches in height and 2 inches in length, creating a compact DS-style form factor. It includes a built-in stylus for navigation, which the Evercade lacks. The Gamkowy uses an IPS display, similar to the Evercade’s 800x480 panel, but prioritizes the nostalgic dual-screen layout. You should choose this if you prefer the classic Nintendo DS interaction style over the Evercade’s dedicated TATE mode buttons. It fits users who value physical media versatility and unique screen configurations for retro gaming on the go.

Retroid Pocket Classic 128GB OLED

The Retroid Pocket Classic 128GB OLED steps up significantly in display quality compared to the Evercade EXP-R. It features a 3.92-inch OLED touchscreen, offering sharper visuals than the Evercade’s 800x480 IPS screen. This device runs on Android 14, providing open app flexibility, whereas the Evercade focuses on its curated cartridge library. The Retroid is larger, measuring 5.43 inches in length and weighing 7.86 ounces, making it less pocket-friendly than the 3.2-ounce Evercade. You should pick this if you prioritize screen clarity and modern OS features over physical cartridges. It suits players who want to install various apps and enjoy high-resolution retro emulation without the constraints of dedicated hardware.

AKNES AYANEO Pocket AIR Mini Retro

The AKNES AYANEO Pocket AIR Mini Retro distinguishes itself with a 4.2-inch 4:3 screen and Hall Effect controls, differing from the Evercade EXP-R’s standard inputs. It measures 6.53 inches in length and 0.74 inches in height, offering a wider display area than the Evercade’s 3.94-inch length. This model focuses on precise input and portability, catering to retro enthusiasts who value accurate analog control. The Evercade provides bundled physical cartridges, while the AYANEO emphasizes hardware precision. You should choose this if you prefer a larger aspect ratio and advanced control mechanisms. It fits users who want a dedicated retro experience with superior tactile feedback and a screen format closer to classic arcade or console standards.

Aivuidbs RG DS Foldable Handheld

The Aivuidbs RG DS Foldable Handheld provides a dual-screen Android experience, contrasting with the Evercade EXP-R’s single-screen, cartridge-based approach. It runs on Android 14 and includes 32GB of memory, offering app flexibility that the Evercade does not. The device features a touchscreen and measures 6.3 inches in length, making it larger and more versatile for modern gaming. The Evercade is lighter and more compact, weighing only 3.2 ounces. You should pick this if you want a flip design with dual displays and open OS capabilities. It suits users who prioritize form factor innovation and the ability to run various Android applications over the simplicity and portability of physical retro cartridges.

GiipGoop RG35XXSP Clamshell Wireless Handheld

The GiipGoop RG35XXSP Clamshell Wireless Handheld offers a compact clamshell design with a magnetic closure, differing from the Evercade EXP-R’s slab-style build. It measures 3.5 inches in length and 3.34 inches in width, making it slightly shorter but thicker at 1.06 inches. This model emphasizes portability and wireless connectivity, ideal for travelers who want a simple, enclosed device. The Evercade provides a larger 800x480 screen and bundled games, while the GiipGoop focuses on a minimalist, travel-friendly form. You should choose this if you value a protective clamshell design and wireless features. It fits users who want a lightweight, enclosed handheld for casual retro gaming without the need for bundled physical media.

Anbernic RG DS Flip 4.0-inch

The Anbernic RG DS Flip 4.0-inch Dual Screen offers a clamshell experience with Android 14, unlike the Evercade EXP-R’s dedicated retro OS. It features a 4-inch display and 32GB of memory, providing app flexibility that the Evercade lacks. The Anbernic measures 3 inches in length and weighs 14.1 ounces, making it heavier and bulkier than the 3.2-ounce Evercade. This model includes a touchscreen and dual-screen utility, catering to users who want modern OS features. You should pick this if you prefer a flip design with Android capabilities.
