Comparing Alternatives to Index
Valve Index PC VR Headset (Renewed)
The renewed Valve Index model shares the same physical dimensions and weight as the new unit. Both measure 12.5 by 12.5 by 15.2 inches and weigh 4 pounds. The primary difference lies in the condition and model number. This option targets PC gamers who want high-resolution SteamVR immersion without buying new hardware. You get the same ergonomic comfort and display quality. However, you accept a refurbished item. This pick suits those who prioritize visual fidelity and library access over brand-new status. The tracking setup remains identical, requiring separate controllers and base stations for full functionality.
HTC Vive SteamVR Base Station 2.0
This HTC Vive Base Station 2.0 is not a headset but essential tracking hardware. It measures 5.8 by 5.3 by 5.8 inches and weighs 1.64 pounds, making it significantly smaller and lighter than the Index headset. It does not replace the headset. Instead, it provides room-scale positioning for existing HTC VR users. If you already own a compatible HTC headset, this item ensures reliable tracking. It offers no display or audio on its own. You should pick this only if your current headset lacks base stations. It complements the Index ecosystem if you need additional tracking coverage for a larger play area.
HTC Vive Focus Vision VR Headset
The HTC Vive Focus Vision differs by operating as a standalone mixed reality headset. It measures 14.6 by 4.9 by 13.3 inches. The data does not list a weight, but it is designed for high-resolution standalone experiences. Unlike the Index, it does not require a PC for basic operation and uses base station-free tracking. It features auto-IPD adjustment and immersive hand tracking. This suits users who value wireless freedom and high-resolution displays over PC tethering. You give up the extensive SteamVR library access of the Index. Pick this if you want a self-contained VR solution with advanced passthrough capabilities.
PlayStation VR2 Horizon Bundle
The PlayStation VR2 Horizon Bundle targets PS5 owners, not PC users. It measures 16.9 by 10 by 7.48 inches and weighs 5.2 pounds, making it larger and heavier than the Index. It includes a title for a ready-to-play console experience. This option requires a PlayStation 5 console, whereas the Index requires a PC. You trade PC compatibility for a bundled console solution. This pick fits users who already own a PS5 and want a complete VR setup. It does not support SteamVR or PC gaming. The weight and size differences may affect comfort during long sessions compared to the lighter Index headset.
HTC VIVE Wired PC Streaming Kit
The HTC VIVE Wired PC Streaming Kit is an accessory, not a standalone headset. It measures 6.8 by 3.9 by 6.8 inches and is designed for wired streaming. It delivers the best visual fidelity for VIVE Focus Vision users who can manage a cable. Unlike the Index, which is a complete headset, this kit enhances streaming stability and image quality. It suits users who prioritize image quality over wireless convenience. You must already own a compatible VIVE headset to use it. This item does not replace the Index. It serves as an upgrade path for existing VIVE Focus Vision owners seeking wired performance improvements.
Pimax Crystal Super Ultrawide VR Headset
The Pimax Crystal Super VR Headset is a high-resolution PC VR option for sim racers and flight enthusiasts. Its model name indicates an ultrawide display. Unlike the Index, it prioritizes visual clarity and immersion over portability. The data does not list dimensions or weight, but it is designed for users who value a wide field of view. It suits PC users who need sharper images for simulation games. You give up the established SteamVR ecosystem support for specialized high-resolution performance. This pick fits enthusiasts who prioritize visual fidelity and a broad view. It is a dedicated PC VR headset for those willing to trade general compatibility for enhanced simulation immersion.
