Looking Beyond the Sony PlayStation VR & Gran? 6 Alternatives Worth a Look

How alternatives compare to PSVR

PlayStation VR Headset with Camera and Move Controllers

The PlayStation VR Headset with Camera and Move Controllers bundles tracked motion peripherals, which the original bundle lacks. You get the same 1920 by 1080 display resolution, but with added input devices for broader game compatibility. This option fits players who want an all-in-one hardware package without buying controllers separately. It remains a wired solution for PS4 owners. If you need precise motion tracking for games beyond racing, this bundle provides the necessary hardware. You sacrifice the specialized Gran Turismo Sport integration for general-purpose VR control. It is a practical upgrade for those needing full motion support.

PlayStation VR Iron Man Bundle

The PlayStation VR Iron Man Bundle offers a specialized experience focused on action gameplay rather than simulation racing. It includes dedicated motion controls tailored for the Iron Man franchise. The packaging dimensions are larger, measuring 16.3 inches in length compared to the original bundle's 10.9 inches. This option suits fans of the franchise seeking immersive action. You trade the realistic driving physics of Gran Turismo for superhero-themed adventures. The core VR headset specifications remain similar, but the software focus shifts entirely. If you prefer narrative-driven action over competitive racing, this bundle aligns better with your interests. It provides a different type of immersion through character-specific mechanics.

Meta Quest 2 128GB White VR Headset

The Meta Quest 2 128GB VR Headset is a standalone device, unlike the original wired PlayStation VR system. It offers 128GB of internal storage for games, removing the need for a console connection. The headset weighs 1.83 pounds and measures 10.2 inches in length. This option fits casual VR players who want freedom from cables and console requirements. You give up the high-refresh-rate OLED display and spatial audio of the PlayStation setup. The trade-off is wireless convenience and portability. If you do not own a PS4 or prefer moving around freely, this standalone headset is a better choice. It sacrifices high-end visual fidelity for ease of use.

HTC Vive SteamVR Base Station 2.0

The HTC Vive SteamVR Base Station 2.0 is a tracking hardware component, not a complete headset bundle like the original. It is designed for PC VR room-scale setups. The unit weighs 1.64 pounds and measures 5.8 inches on each side. This option fits PC VR players who need dedicated tracking for supported systems like Vive Pro. You do not get a display or game bundle here. Instead, you gain precise room-scale tracking capabilities. This is an upgrade for enthusiasts building a high-end PC VR rig. It is not a direct alternative for casual console gaming. If you already own a compatible headset and need better tracking, this base station enhances your setup significantly.

Meta Quest Pro

The Meta Quest Pro VR Headset includes 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, catering to creative professionals. It features pancake lenses for improved clarity and facial tracking capabilities. The headset weighs 1.94 pounds and measures 15.7 inches in length. This option suits users who value high visual clarity and advanced tracking over lightweight comfort. You sacrifice the specific racing simulation of the original bundle for professional-grade mixed reality features. The device may be too heavy for long gaming sessions. If you need robust hardware for creative work or detailed avatar tracking, this headset offers superior specs. It is a specialized tool rather than a casual gaming bundle.

Meta Quest Pro VR Headset

The Meta Quest Pro 256GB VR Headset emphasizes advanced mixed reality passthrough and detailed avatar tracking. It weighs 6.38 pounds, making it significantly heavier than the original bundle. The model is identified as Meta Quest Pro. This option fits professionals needing high visual clarity and local storage. You give up the portability and lower weight of the PlayStation VR system. The heavy build is a trade-off for enhanced mixed reality capabilities. If you prioritize advanced tracking and local storage for professional workflows, this headset is suitable. It is not ideal for casual racing games. The substantial weight difference makes it less comfortable for extended periods compared to the original wired headset.
