How each alternative compares
Evercade EXP-R Retro Handheld
The Evercade EXP-R is significantly smaller and lighter than the AKNES AYANEO Pocket AIR Mini. It measures 3.94 by 1.97 inches and weighs just 3.2 ounces, making it far more pocketable than the 269g Mini. You trade the Mini’s larger 4.2-inch screen for this compact size. The EXP-R uses physical cartridges, which offers a different tactile experience than the Mini’s digital Android 11 setup. It lacks the Mini’s active cooling fan and Hall Effect joystick. Choose this if you prioritize extreme portability and physical media over screen real estate and advanced control features.
Gamkowy RG DS Plus Dual-Screen
The Gamkowy RG DS Plus features a flip design with a stylus, unlike the Mini’s traditional handheld layout. Its 4.3-inch IPS screen is slightly larger than the Mini’s 4.2-inch display. The Mini offers Hall Effect controls for drift-free joysticks, which the Gamkowy does not specify. The Gamkowy is heavier at 14.1 ounces compared to the Mini’s 269g. It runs Android for app flexibility, similar to the Mini. Pick the Gamkowy if you want a clamshell form factor and stylus input for precise menu navigation. It is less ideal if you need the Mini’s compact 18.7mm thickness and dedicated retro-focused hardware controls.
Retroid Pocket Classic 128GB OLED
The Retroid Pocket Classic offers a 3.92-inch OLED screen, providing deeper blacks and higher contrast than the Mini’s 500-nit HD display. It runs Android 14, whereas the Mini uses Android 11. The Retroid has 128GB of storage, significantly more than the Mini’s 32GB. It is heavier at 7.86 ounces and larger in footprint than the Mini. The Retroid lacks the Mini’s Hall Effect joystick and active cooling system. Choose this device if you value screen quality and modern Android features over the Mini’s specialized retro controls and compact, lightweight design for classic gaming.
Aivuidbs RG DS Foldable Handheld
The Aivuidbs RG DS Foldable uses a dual-screen layout, differing from the Mini’s single 4.2-inch display. It runs Android and includes 32GB of memory, matching the Mini’s storage capacity. The Aivuidbs is thicker at 0.83 inches compared to the Mini’s 0.74 inches. It lacks the Mini’s Hall Effect controls and active cooling fan. The dual-screen design supports emulation of systems that use two displays. Select this if you want the unique dual-screen experience. Avoid it if you prefer the Mini’s single-screen simplicity, lighter weight, and more modern Android 11 operating system with dedicated retro tools.
GiipGoop RG35XXSP Clamshell Wireless Handheld
The GiipGoop RG35XXSP features a clamshell design with a magnetic display cover, offering protection the Mini’s open design lacks. It includes a bundled 64GB storage card, double the Mini’s 32GB. The Mini has a larger 4.2-inch screen compared to the GiipGoop’s smaller display. The GiipGoop is heavier at 8.96 ounces. It provides wireless connectivity, similar to the Mini’s Wi-Fi. The Mini offers Hall Effect joystick accuracy, which the GiipGoop does not specify. Choose the GiipGoop if you need display protection and compact folding. Pick the Mini if you want a larger screen, better controls, and a lighter, more portable form factor.

The Mini’s 4.2-inch 4:3 screen is optimized for retro gaming, while the Anbernic offers dual-screen flexibility. Select the Anbernic if you want a clamshell device with dual displays.
