All entries focus on practical specs like processor type, display quality, and thermal management to help you find the right fit.
How alternatives compare to RG556
Voacle Anbernic RG Slide 4.7-inch Android Handheld
The Voacle Anbernic RG Slide uses a sliding keyboard mechanism, which changes the input method significantly from the RG556’s fixed layout. It features a 7-inch display, which is larger than the RG556’s 5.48-inch OLED panel. This device prioritizes screen smoothness with a 120Hz refresh rate, a feature not listed for the RG556. You trade the compact OLED screen for a wider viewing area and mechanical keys. The RG Slide is heavier at 14.1 ounces, compared to the RG556’s lighter chassis. This option suits users who want a slide design and high refresh rate over the RG556’s OLED contrast and smaller footprint.
Anbernic RG476H Android Handheld
The Anbernic RG476H focuses on active cooling performance, similar to the RG556’s heat pipe and fan setup. It offers a 7-inch screen, providing more real estate than the RG556’s 5.48-inch panel. This device targets users who build their own game libraries and value thermal management for sustained performance. The RG476H is slightly wider and taller than the RG556, affecting portability. It lacks the OLED display technology found in the RG556, opting for a different screen type. If you prioritize screen smoothness and active cooling over OLED contrast, this alternative provides a robust Android experience with a larger display area.
Voacle Anbernic RG VITA 5.46-Inch Handheld
The Voacle Anbernic RG VITA offers a large 5.46-inch touchscreen, which is comparable in size to the RG556’s 5.48-inch OLED. However, it runs Android 12, whereas the RG556 uses Android 13. This device emphasizes large screen Android emulation and streaming capabilities. You give up the OLED panel for a standard touchscreen, which may affect contrast levels. The RG VITA is designed for users who prioritize display size and streaming over preloaded content. It provides a solid processor for handheld gaming but lacks the specific OLED benefits of the RG556. This is a practical choice for those who want a similar screen size with a different operating system version.
Anbernic RG406V Android Handheld
The Anbernic RG406V is a compact 4-inch Android handheld, significantly smaller than the RG556’s 5.48-inch display. It prioritizes portability and Android flexibility over screen size. This device is ideal for users who want a manageable chassis for retro emulation and streaming on the go. You trade the large OLED screen for a much more portable form factor. The RG406V lacks the OLED technology and larger RAM of the RG556, focusing instead on a smaller footprint. If you value portability and a compact design over screen real estate and high-end emulation specs, this alternative offers a reliable Android experience in a smaller package.
Doriteney RG DS Dual IPS Screen Handheld
The Doriteney RG DS features a dual IPS screen setup, which is a unique departure from the RG556’s single OLED panel. It is designed for retro enthusiasts who value dual-screen mechanics and tactile stylus control. This device separates system functions across two screens, offering a different gameplay experience. You give up the large single OLED display and high RAM of the RG556 for a niche dual-screen form factor. The RG DS is a specialized tool for those who prioritize stylus control and system separation. It is not a direct alternative for general emulation but serves a specific subset of retro gamers who prefer dual-screen interfaces.
Voacle RG477V 4.7-inch Android 14 Handheld
The Voacle RG477V is a 4.7-inch Android 14 handheld, running a newer OS than the RG556’s Android 13. It features 128GB of storage, which may exceed the RG556’s internal capacity depending on the variant. This device prioritizes raw processing power and modern wireless standards over screen size. You trade the larger OLED screen for a smaller display with higher storage and a newer Android version. The RG477V is a solid choice for performance-focused handheld gaming. It suits users who value modern software support and storage capacity over the OLED contrast and larger screen real estate of the RG556.
