How alternatives differ from the RG557
Retroid Pocket Flip 2 5.5-Inch Clamshell
The Retroid Pocket Flip 2 5.5-Inch Clamshell offers a protective folding chassis, which the RG557 lacks. It uses a Snapdragon 865 processor instead of the Dimensity 8300. This means slightly lower raw power but a more compact, pocketable form factor when closed. The 1080p AMOLED screen matches the RG557’s resolution but sits in a clamshell design. You gain durability and portability but lose the open-face ease of access. Choose this if you prioritize physical protection and a smaller footprint over maximum processing speed.
AYN Odin 3 Pro 6-Inch Android Handheld
The AYN Odin 3 Pro 6-Inch Android Handheld features a larger 6-inch AMOLED panel with a 120Hz refresh rate, beating the RG557’s 60Hz display. It also includes 12GB of LPDDR5X RAM and 256GB of UFS 3.1 storage. While the RG557 uses UFS 4.0, the Odin 3 Pro’s larger screen and higher refresh rate offer smoother visuals for demanding emulation. It is heavier and wider, so you trade portability for a premium viewing experience. Pick this if you want flagship-grade screen smoothness and do not mind a bulkier device.
Anbernic RG556 5.48-inch Android Handheld
The Anbernic RG556 5.48-inch Android Handheld shares the same 5.48-inch AMOLED display size as the RG557. However, it typically runs on older Android versions and Bluetooth standards compared to the RG557’s Android 14 and Bluetooth 5.3. The RG556 is often priced lower, making it a budget option for those who prioritize the AMOLED screen quality over the latest connectivity features. You get similar visual fidelity but may face compatibility issues with newer apps. Choose this if you want a cheaper AMOLED handheld and do not need the newest OS.
GiipGoop RG556 5.48" AMOLED Retro Console
The GiipGoop RG556 5.48" AMOLED Retro Console is another variant of the 5.48-inch form factor. It matches the RG557’s screen size and type but often lacks the latest Bluetooth 5.3 connectivity. The RG557’s Android 14 OS provides better multitasking and app support than older Android versions found on some RG556 models. You get a similar visual experience but with potentially older wireless standards. Select this alternative if you find it at a significantly lower price and are comfortable managing your own game files on an older Android base.
Mangmi Pocket Max 7" AMOLED
The Mangmi Pocket Max 7" AMOLED features a much larger 7-inch screen with a 144Hz refresh rate, far exceeding the RG557’s 5.48-inch 60Hz panel. It includes 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. The RG557 offers more RAM (12GB) and faster UFS 4.0 storage, but the Pocket Max prioritizes screen size and smoothness. The larger display makes it less portable and harder to hold for long periods. Choose this if you value a massive, high-refresh-rate screen for home use and can accept reduced battery life and portability.
RgAmbernic RG556 5.48" AMOLED
The RgAmbernic RG556 5.48" AMOLED Android 13 Handheld runs Android 13, which is one version behind the RG557’s Android 14. It shares the 5.48-inch AMOLED display size. The RG557 offers newer software support and Bluetooth 5.3, while this model may have older connectivity. You get a similar screen experience but with potentially less future-proof software. Pick this if you prefer a specific color option or find it at a lower cost, and you do not require the latest Android features for your emulation setup.
